In his work "Illustrazione del Parmenide di Platone" (1743), Antonio Conti offered a radical reinterpretation of the Platonic tradition, rejecting the Neo-Platonic and Renaissance readings of it. The present study aims to reconstruct the outlines of Conti’s Platonism and consider its significance within the context of his thought, which is based on the major achievements of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century philosophy. Against the backdrop of early modern Italian culture, this essay sheds light on the core elements of his programme for cultural renewal. Conti’s interest in Plato’s philosophy does not seem to be the result of his eclecticism or an attempt to avoid religious censorship, but it appears to stem from a systematic effort to elucidate the intellectual foundations of the new philosophy and science of nature.
