The author explores the earliest experiences of blissful emotional states from the very beginning of life. These primary forms of happiness are associated with experiences of union, of oneness, of fusional liquidity and at-onement. They are deep aesthetic experiences, which envelop and contain the infant and protect it from too early and too harsh encounters with the reality of separateness after the loss of prenatal containment. Psychoanalytic authors have offered meaningful contributions towards a deeper understanding of these primary mental states. References are made to Freud, Klein, Winnicott, Bion, Meltzer, Grotstein, Tustin and Haag. Their conceptualizations, as well as their creative lexical proposals are commented with the intention to encompass the area of enquiry around these primary states and experiences of elation which can be observed from the earliest stages of human life. Two detailed vignettes of Infant Observation are quoted, discussed and interpreted in the light of the above-mentioned theoretical concepts. A clinical contribution is offered through the dream of an adult woman, which gives access to a deeper understanding not only of the author’s notion of the Sound Object, but more in general of the role and function of the earliest, even prenatal auditory and rhythmical experiences, as well as of the possibilities of the re-emergence of echoes of these blissful primary emotional states throughout the human life cycle.
