Titolo: "Alla ricerca di una storia felice". Vanda Shrenger Weiss, la prima psicoanalista in Italia
Periodico: Psiche
Anno: 2025 - Fascicolo: 1 - Pagina iniziale: 367 - Pagina finale: 380

The author exames some writings of the doctor and paediatrician Vanda Shrenger Weiss, the first female psychoanalyst in Italy. Vanda Shrenger was born into a large Jewish family in Croatia (1892), and her life was thoroughly intertwined with the European tragedies of the 20th century. In 1917 she married Edoardo Weiss, the future founder of the Italian psychoanalytic society, and during the time spent in Italy (1919-1939) she dedicated herself to psychoanalysis. She played a crucial part in the reconstruction of SPI, whilst also being a founding member of the Rivista Italiana di Psicoanalisi (Roma, 1932). Vanda was the first women to be a member of SPI as well as to present a paper for it. The introduction of fascist racial laws led to her and her husband seeking refuge in the United States of America. After her emigration, Vanda would approach and then join the Jungian Society. She appears to have been a pioneer who experienced the dramatic contradictions of her time, continuing to do her best to alleviate psychic suffering and demonstrating that she knew how to overcome the rigidity and barriers of different schools of thought. With hope and, perhaps, with a little bit of happiness.
