248In May 1642, one of the most enigmatic texts in Hugo Grotius’s oeuvre was published: the "De Origine Gentium Americanarum Dissertatio". Through this short treatise of only thirteen pages, the Delft jurist entered the debate over the origins of the Americans, initiating the controversy with Johannes de Laet, an eminent Dutch geographer. Previous scholarship has mainly focused on Grotius’s motives and the method he used, while less attention has been paid to the sources used to write the text. This essay aims to explore this aspect further by analyzing "De Origine" in the context of the contemporary debate on the origins, and to shed new light on the intellectual networks that may have influenced its composition.
