317The relationship between Leo Strauss and liberalism is debated. Some scholars see the German philosopher as an enemy of liberal democracy, being an elitist with aristocratic ideals. Others view him as a strong defender of liberalism who exposed its weaknesses and enemies. This essay aims to show how he cannot be seen as an enthusiast of liberalism, on the contrary: he posed some of the most formidable theoretical challenges to it. According to Strauss relativism and individualism, characterizing modernity and liberalism, undermine the cohesion of the political community. His thought constitutes a radical attempt to address the challenges of modernity through the lessons of the ancients. Modernity peaks in an overcoming of itself.
