This paper examines the demographic, organizational, and economic challenges that Italian SMEs enterprises face in the context of an aging workforce. In recent decades, Italy has experienced a significant transformation in its labor market, with a steadily declining proportion of working-age individuals and a marked increase in the percentage of older workers. Craft enterprises – an essential pillar of the Italian economy – are particularly affected by these trends due to their reliance on specialized skills, traditional work practices, and a generational imbalance. The paper introduces age management as a strategic approach aimed at transforming these challenges into opportunities. Age management involves the development and implementation of policies and practices specifically designed to create an inclusive work environment. Such practices emphasize the value of older workers’ experience while promoting their continued engagement through targeted interventions. The discussion reviews some diagnostic tools enable organizations to map their workforce’s demographic profile, evaluate work ability, and identify areas where interventions are most needed. Moreover, the paper underscores the importance of integrating age management within broader human resource strategies, including continuous training initiatives, mentorship programs, flexible work arrangements, and policies to counteract age discrimination. Such integration not only fosters employee well-being and enhanced productivity but also bolsters the long-term competitiveness and resilience of enterprises. Overall, the findings advocate for a proactive investment in age management initiatives as a means to leverage the invaluable experience of older workers and to secure the future performance of artisan enterprises in an evolving economic landscape.
