Labour markets have recently been shaped by multiple factors, including technological innovations – such as the emergence of «new jobs» within the digital economy – and the reorganization of production processes driven by globalization. These dynamics have coincided with stagnation or slow growth in the European economy, particularly in Italy, where repeated economic shocks have further hindered recovery. This paper first examines the major economic shocks that have affected these economies over the past two decades. It then focuses on recent trends in key labour market indicators and the composition of new employment, comparing Italy with other European countries. We explore the quality of the newly created jobs, the issue of in-work poverty, and developments in working hours. We also address wage dynamics, especially in real terms – considering the recent surge in inflation – and their relationship with productivity trends and labour taxation. Finally, we reflect on the relationship between wages and consumption, and consider the role of welfare services in supporting worker well-being.
