476This essay provides an overview of the historiographical debate on Catholicism and African slavery from the 16th to the 19th century. Historical research is divided into three periods: the first, from the 1960s to the 1980s, is characterized by pioneering studies that open up all lines of research, such as those on biblical sources, theology, canon law, institutional actors, papacy; this phase is driven by the process of decolonization. The second period, from the 1990s to 2004-2007, ends with the celebration and is characterized by the question of modern reparations. The final period, from 2008 to 2025, is dominated by a significant increase in studies adopting new approaches to the subject. The conclusions suggest new lines of research.
