Titolo: Alanna Mitchell’s «Sea Sick»: The Role of Stories in Environmental Communication
Periodico: Textus

This paper reads Canadian journalist Alanna Mitchell’s Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis (2009) inspired by insights from the environmental and blue humanities. In the text, Mitchell’s stories stress the connection between humans and water while also referring to narratives related to human responsibility in the climate crisis and potential for change. Through theories of cultural ecology, storied matter, and affective engagement, the paper argues that Mitchell’s merging of modes of narration and her depiction of the ocean as possessing narrative agency work together to emotionally engage her readership and thus have potential for motivating a change in behaviour.
