143Joseph Conrad’s experience as a sailor deeply informs The Mirror of the Sea, his autobiographical meditation on maritime life. This essay offers a blue ecocritical reading of the text, arguing that Conrad’s sea is a dynamic force that embodies the strife central to blue ecology, in contrast to the stasis associated with green ecology. Reflecting on shipwrecks, acceleration, and the transition from sail to steam, Conrad critiques anthropocentric modernity and explores humanity’s changing relationship with nature. The essay demonstrates how his maritime reflections enrich contemporary environmental discourse and contribute to a “blueµ genealogy of ecological thought.
