162This essay situates The Waves within the Blue Humanities, illustrating how liquid and gaseous water permeates Woolf’s novel as an inherently relational element. First, I will discuss how the shifting focalisation and the vignettes of the natural world create a blend of prose and poetry. Then, I will examine how the various states of water invite the reader to acknowledge the transitions across human and nonhuman scales. As the essay seeks to demonstrate, «The Waves» can be read as a modernist water story that reflects the uncertainties of the Anthropocene, advocating for a reconnection between humans and the environment.
