217Through analysis of Madukka the River Serpent, this article demonstrates how Julie Janson reinvents the Western, canonical detective fiction genre to foreground Indigenous voices and perspectives. First, I discuss the significance of water in Indigenous cultures and lifeways, highlighting the correlation between colonialism and current extractive practices in water management, especially in settler states such as Australia. Next, I examine how Janson reshapes traditional “ingredients” of detective stories, including the notion of crime and the role of the detective, to expose ongoing discrimination against Indigenous peoples and their water ontologies in settler Australia, as well as advancing an ethos of care and respect for the more-than-human world.
