63The demographic transition is a theoretical model describing the shift from an old demographic equilibrium, characterized by high birth and death rates, to a modern one with low rates of both. However, closer examination of real-world cases suggests that the model, while broadly valid, requires careful and flexible application. What is often referred to as “the” demographic transition may actually consist of multiple transitions driven by continuous improvements in survival rates. These transitions have occurred at varying times, speeds, and with distinct characteristics across populations. Additionally, the concept of equilibrium, both before and after the transition, may need reconsideration, as it likely applies only over very long periods. Lastly, while much attention is given to how the transition affects total population size, its structural consequences–particularly ageing–are equally significant.
