This work aims to analyze the emergence of the ‘military-digital complex’, namely the increasingly tight relationship between the military and intelligence apparatuses and the large digital platforms – Meta (Facebook), Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet (Google) and Apple, the so-called ‘Big Tech’. Drawing on theories of monopoly capital and imperialism studies, the channels that feed the mutual dependence between Big Tech and the military sector are described, tracing their roots to the control they exert over ‘dual’ knowledge, infrastructures and technologies that are essential in both the civil and military spheres. In doing so, the main elements of continuity and discontinuity with respect to the ‘military-industrial complex’ consolidated in the second half of the 20th century are shown. Finally, focusing on the United States, this contribution documents the growing relevance of Big Tech as contractors for the Department of Defense, as well as the ‘revolving door’ mechanism and the direct involvement of platforms in contemporary conflicts. The work concludes with a reflection on the need to remove technologies and innovation infrastructures from the private control of Big Tech, in order to reorient their development and use away from capitalist valorization and the progressive militarization of the digital domain. Keywords: Digital Platforms, Military Industry
