The competition between anthropic activities and nature conservation for land use is a challenge. In this article we examine the contrasts between nature conservation and extractive needs of societies from a perspective of “green” transition. We focused our analysis onto biodiversity and ecosystem services for nature conservation, and their role to support rural development in the common agricultural policy of EU, as well as human wellbeing. Payments for ecosystem services, framed by interventions in rural development and Other Effective areabased Conservation Measures, were proposed as a means to support sustainable development and keep humans within safe and just Earth system boundaries.
