224The article critically analyzes the recent history of school-to-work alternance in Italy, now renamed PCTO (Percorsi per le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento). The article establishes a political-economic genealogy of the “human capital” and places it in the balance of the theory and policies of so-called “work transitions”. Schoolto- work alternance is part of a broader neoliberal strategy aimed at the formation of the “employable” subject. This strategy aims to form an adaptable and self-sufficient subject capable of doing moral work on himself , the world and relationships. The educational experience is thus transformed into a process of self-valorization and construction of human capital, in which schools assume the role of agents of “vulnerabilization”. Through an analysis that weaves together sociology of labor, labor economics, political economy criticism, critical pedagogy and political philosophy, this essay deconstructs the key concepts of competence, merit and employability that underlie neoliberal schooling. What is at stake here is the possibility of alternative subjectification starting from the rejection of the role of human capital.
