Visions of robotic-driven futures are inscribed in powerful discourses and infuse the practices and materials of schooling. This article wants to present a case in which the envisioning of educational futures is not dominated by EdTech industries, narrating the complexities and contingencies involved in the making of an imaginary of educational robotics. The aim is to analyse how the imaginary of educational robotics is (re)constructed and (re)made – translated, highlighting the social, material, and technical entanglements at play. Aligning with Callon’s sociology of translation (1986), the analysis reconstructs the moments of translation revealing: a) how the problematisation stage includes different features of the imaginary of educational robotics; b) how the interessement stage includes various negotiations and displacements of the educational robotics imaginary, led by new actors within the networks; c) how the translation becomes a betrayal where AI systems represent a controversial issue and how the enrolment stage ends with the formation of two spaces (innovators and subjects of resistance); and d) how in the mobilisation stage engineers, researchers, imaginaries and technologies crystallise their role as educational subjects and how these actors are put into effect in different spaces. The analysis concludes with further reflections on power relations and participatory future-making.
