443The article analyses the social practices which characterise an 'open school', meaning a school whose infrastructural spaces become open to the territory and to the local community as a result of the practices performed by teachers, parents, citizens and other social actors. The practices considered here are the one carried out in the cities of Rome and Bergamo, which constitute two case studies within the four years lasting national project 'Network of Open and Participatory Schools', conducted in Italy since September 2020. From a theoretical perspective, the article poses itself in the long debate regarding 'educating communities', as privileged social form to develop a shared responsibility for the development of educational processes and care processes for the youth and for their future. The empirical approach uses the analytical framework of the 'Social practice theory', developed by Shove and colleagues, with the aim to highlight the critical dimensions of the practices performed by the actors involved in the examined case studies. The results show the importance of a variety of different but interdependent practices, which can be categorised with reference to the three key dimensions evoked by the practices analysed here: the relational one, the material one and the epistemological one.
