The article retraces the realisation of the new urban neighbourhoods envisaged by the Plan for the Reclamation of the Sassi, which constituted an exceptional experimental laboratory for urban planning and architecture in the 1950s. In particular, it focuses on the settlement model of neighbourhood units that constituted its fulcrum, itself a physical translation of the Olivettian concept of community, and summarises the different interpretations of it given by the planners in the three neighbourhoods envisaged by Luigi Piccinato: Spine Bianche, Serra Venerdì and Lanera. It then addresses the question of the possible strategies and tools to be adopted to reconcile a necessary action of urban and social regeneration with the conservation of this heritage and its testimonial value, also taking into account the initiatives underway for the responsible involvement of the inhabitants, in line with the perspective indicated by the Faro Convention.
