52This article investigates the trajectories of itinerant beggars in late eighteenth-century Brabant (in present-day Belgium). It analyzes a sample of court files of people arrested for vagrancy on the one hand, and of royal begging licenses on the other hand, to examine the travels of 'lawful' and 'unlawful' mendicants respectively. In an ambiguous policy context that selectively criminalized and facilitated itinerant begging, adequately navigating the constraints and opportunities of down-market travel was vital for people whose main purpose of being on the road was the collection of alms. By analyzing the spatial and social dimensions of their journeys, this article aims to shed light on the contours and infrastructure of their travels, and on the dimensions of begging rounds as income strategy for the eighteenth-century poor.
