This study offers a microhistorical perspective on the diversity of migrant networks of the mobile poor in an Antwerp lodging house in the second half of the nineteenth century. It argues that migration historians have too easily conflated a lack of economic capital (money, resources) with a lack of cultural (education, profession) and social (relationships, communication) capital. The microhistorical approach reveals a wide, although anecdotal, variety of migration strategies and information flows through the lodging house: Eastern European peddlers engaging the housekeeper as a business partner; German musicians traveling in remunerated bands; and artisans exploring work opportunities throughout the city and port. While on the move, many kept close contacts with the home front, both financially and emotionally. The lodging house emerges not as a gateway to marginalization, but as a crucial institution for mobile work.
