This essay explores the evolving relationship between state and citizen in Canovist Restoration Spain, focusing on the intellectual debate as reflected in most important cultural reviews. The necessities of the emerging modern Spanish society and its insertion into the networks of the imperial global economy fostered a statist, centralist vision, gradually marginalizing more participatory and civic-oriented views of citizenship. This issue echoed broader European patterns and subtly anticipated the more explicit reconfiguration that, as historiography has shown, emerged after the Desastre of 1898.
