255In the light of the recent Italian translation of "The World Viewed" (1971-1979), this essay aims to investigate the nature of the relationship between Stanley Cavell’s philosophy of cinema and the (unequivocally skeptical) gaze of an author such as Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the European directors who mainly contributed to shape the ontological architecture of modern cinema. As Cavell writes in the original preface, while those films: «[…] invited reflections they also (perhaps thereby) achieved a continuity with the Hollywood movies – that Hollywood itself was losing. They were no longer foreign». The acknowledgment described in this passage can be presented again in an experiment of projection, through which the philosopher’s words and the filmmaker’s images seem to carry on a conversation happily.
