For Stanely Cavell, criticism is a form of conversation (distinguished from hermeneutic «dialogue») that takes place starting from the work of art. When criticism concerns films, the works of art with which it is related are «popular», and therefore characterized, among other things, by generic forms, primarily tragedy and comedy. Conversation as a central form of criticism allows the aesthetic value of the cinematographic work to be transported towards an ethical dimension, transformative, in a «perfectionist» sense, of the spectator’s spirit.
