Based on Stanley Cavell’s concept of exemplarity, this article explores the tension between the unique nature of exemplary works and television seriality. It argues that, for Cavell, true examples are not mere illustrations of a category but singular, transformative exemplars that resist imitation – a view developed through his readings of film genres. While Cavell initially associates television with rigid, non-revelatory serial formats, the article proposes that certain contemporary TV series, like Breaking Bad, challenge this distinction. By generating transformative narrative expansions and spin-offs, such series demonstrate how seriality itself can become a vehicle for exemplarity, creating a self-renewing, Cavellian form of philosophical and aesthetic instruction.
