This paper aims at criticizing Quentin Meillassoux’s "After Finitude", focusing on his principle of factiality and the ontologisation of contingency. It argues that Meillassoux makes an illicit shift from epistemic to ontological claims when addressing the factual nature of the correlation between being and thought. In contrast, it defends a more modest epistemic reading of contingency and rejects the speculative realist ambition to ground science in absolute contingency.
