This study examines the rise and circulation of anthropology, ethnology, and the history of religions in Italy during the early decades of the twentieth century. In particular, it focuses on the reception of Giambattista Vico’s thought and it reconstructs how the ideas articulated in the "New Science" (1744) stimulated the emerging anthropological discourse. With this aim, the works of scholars such as Raffaele Pettazzoni, Remo Cantoni, and Ernesto De Martino are analyzed, demonstrating to which extent, despite their peculiarities, they followed in the wake of Vico’s thought. Particular attention is also given to the role that Benedetto Croce played in the debate about the development of these disciplines, showing how the reception and interpretation of Vico’s ideas became a crucial intellectual arena both for the rising of anthropological thought in Italy and for Croce’s intellectual hegemony.
