What does it mean to comment on Dante at the end of the 1980s – a period marked by social and political disengagement and, as Sciascia observed, a decline in both the educational system and the broader intellectual landscape? This essay focuses on a 1988 letter from Leonardo Sciascia to Vittorio Sermonti, along with Sermonti’s reply. By interweaving the reflections that Vittorio Sermonti dedicated to Sciascia with the latter’s writings of civic engagement, this study seeks to place the two letters within a broader interpretive framework. In doing so, it aims to contextualize Sermonti’s commentary on the "Commedia" within the complex relationship between the reading of Dante – often shaped by the mediation of the school system – and the formation of Italian national consciousness.
