The present study offers a literary and philosophical analysis of Jorge Luis Borges’ short story entitled "The House of Asterion". The focus of the study is threefold: firstly, the perception of reality from the perspective of the marginalised; secondly, the allegorical than metaphorical reinterpretation of the Greek myth of the Minotaur; and thirdly, Borges’s metafictional reflections on literary creation, with particular reference to the interplay between orality and writing in the Western European tradition. Specifically, referentiality and oblique focalisation are related to intertextuality, recalling Vergil’s allusive conciseness. Furthermore, the conclusion is associated with a philosophical subtext that emerges from the manuscript held in the library in Virginia; it problematises some grammatical structures relating to the non-defence of the Minotaur, prompting the reader to reread the story and reconsider its apparent meaning.
