John Fante’s relationship with cinema remains an area of the writer’s activity that has not yet been explored as thoroughly as it deserves. One of his most interesting film-related works is "The Roses", a screenplay inspired by a story by Félicien Marceau. The article is structured in four parts. In the first, Fante’s relationship with cinema is introduced in general terms. In the second, Marceau’s story is examined, noting that there are two versions – one with a happy ending and one with a bitter conclusion. In the third part, the screenplay is analysed, highlighting its differences with Marceau’s story and bringing out the typical characteristics Fante’s writing (for example, the absence of a privileged point of view). The last part discusses the various reasons that may have contributed to the failure to realise this film project. "The Roses" is significant because it underscores the profound impression that Naples made on Fante and because the writer instils the male protagonist with autobiographical features.
