This paper is an ethnographic description of the funeral rituals of a Romá community from Bosnia settled in Cagliari (Italy) for forty years. It shows how the Romá community accepted me into the group and trained me to participate at the most private ritual in a nomad camp. In particular, the article focuses on funeral customs as practices of resistance and recognition in the space in which the community lives and in which the dead «return». The ethnographic notes analyze the constant dualism of hetero/self-identification, Romá/Gagé, formal/informal, right/wrong, clean/dirty, pure/impure, which emphasises the need to defend an identity constantly recognised (as undermined) in difference and otherness.
