This essay aims to read Giulio Bollati’s main work, "L’Italiano", in the light of unpublished materials: notes, pages dating back to his education. The aim is to navigate an arduous, complex text, interwoven with references to previous research. Is this just a scholarly work? The question we aim to answer will therefore be compared with the 'characters' who animate Bollati’s treatment: in particular, Leopardi and Manzoni. These move on the edge of utopia: but the boundaries between political guilt and literary utopia are blurred. Many other names appear in Bollati’s pages: forgotten and reawakened by his pen and the tenacity of his investigation. To accurately portray the story of a forgery: that of the 'Italian'. A deception that dragged on from the beginning of the nineteenth century.
