152In the current sociological debate, an emerging topic of growing interest is that of the relationship between youth, gender and religion. To make a contribution to this, the article investigates a hitherto neglected issue: gender differences in the divide between generations in the religious sphere. The analysis – guided by a multidimensional approach to the concept of religiosity – is developed from the Italian data of the European Values Study (EVS), with a period covered spanning from 1980 to 2017. The results reveal not only that, as expected, young people are generally more secularised than the less young; but also, that being young weakens more certain aspects of female rather than male religiosity. Specifically, the distance between generations of women in religious commitment is greater than it is among men with respect to the spiritual dimension (relating to beliefs) and the behavioural dimension (relating to practice) of religiosity. The concluding reflections are devoted precisely to the peculiarities of those dimensions, also in comparison with the identity-cultural and institutional aspects of religiosity also considered here.
