Air quality is a major determinant of quality of life in urban environments. However, despite the existence of numerous objective data sources, research on the subjective perception of air pollution remains limited. The prevailing approach, largely based on objective indicators, can provide only a partial understanding of environmental phenomena, as highlighted by studies by Chiarini et al. (2020; 2021). This paper introduces a map of air quality perceptions in Italy, at Provinces scale, based on a multidimensional indicator constructed using data from a purposely designed sample survey. The variables employed to build the indicator explore various aspects of air quality assessment, such as the relevance of specific pollution sources, the level of concern generated by air quality, and the perceived impact of pollution on health and overall quality of life. The availability of a perception-based indicator at the provincial scale, in addition to filling an information gap, can support the evaluation and implementation process of public policies for sustainable development. Indeed, understanding the drivers of subjective perceptions, such as concerns for environmental quality from an intergenerational perspective, can support the design of policies aimed at preserving the quality of the urban environment. Furthermore, where it is possible to compare objective and subjective indicators, the analysis of possible mismatch between the two sets of metrics can contribute to understanding the accurate perception of the quality of public services, with important policy implications that could arise from analyzing the determinants of any gaps.
