221This article proposes a conceptual and operational extension of human capital by incorporating the psychosocioeconomic dimension of human identity as a fundamental component of the economic agent. Moving beyond traditional neoclassical interpretations, a theoretical-formal model is developed to realistically and comprehensively represent the human, cultural, and occupational components of human capital. Using data from AlmaLaurea (2005-2024) and linear regression models, an index of specialized cultural identity is constructed to assess its evolution and long-term economic impact. The results reveal a statistically significant relationship between academic performance (final degree grade and time-to-degree) and income one year after graduation across various Italian macro-regions. Additionally, a positive – albeit more indirect – effect on per capita GDP growth is identified. The inclusion of a proxy for graduates’ qualitative abilities significantly enhances the explanatory power of the econometric models, underscoring the importance of human capital quality in driving economic development. Based on these findings, the study highlights the need for public policies that not only expand access to tertiary education but also strengthen critical and relational skills, in line with endogenous growth theories and Hirschman’s participatory framework.
