254This article analyses the evolution of regional disparities in Italy, highlighting how the economic and social disparities between the North and the South are the result of a historically unbalanced process of industrialisation. By first examining a set of social indicators – such as infant mortality, height, and literacy – and subsequently economic indicators – such as GDP per capita, the share of employment in industry, and labour productivity – the historical phases of divergence and temporary convergence across the country’s regions are identified. The analysis also examines current differences in labour productivity, wages, and prices, as well as recent demographic dynamics, showing how these factors sustain persistent territorial disparities and negatively affect perceived well-being. This persistent socioeconomic divergence has effectively led to the existence of two «Italies», characterised by deep structural and qualitative differences that extend well beyond the purely economic dimension.
