During the Information Overload Era, the accessibility, preservation and manipulation of sources are crucial processes for the formation of a collective memory. With the shift from physical to digital media, sources are much more volatile than in the past; the increasingly widespread use of AI raises new issues related to the accelerated production or alteration of sources, especially in conflict situations, such as in Ukraine or Gaza. This essay aims to reflect on the impact that new ways of managing digital sources could have on the construction/deconstruction of a socially shared memory, through Mannheim’s categories of substantial and functional rationality.
