70This study investigates the pivotal role of multimodal communication in contemporary, multilingual animated films that focus on non-dominant cultures. The research empirically and diachronically analyses a corpus of thirty-seven American multilingual animated films set in non-mainstream countries, released between 1990 and 2024. Its primary aims are to demonstrate how the ethnic characters’ mother tongues (verbal code) are pragmatically reinforced by interwoven semiotic codes – visual, spatial, gestural, verbal-visual, and musical – which act as cultural markers. Also, this paper aims to verify if and how multimodal pragmatic strategies have evolved over this three-decade period. Preliminary findings suggest that modern multicultural animated films operate as complex multimodal pragmatic systems, constructing culturally resonant narratives that successfully bridge linguacultural divides and foster cross-cultural identities.
