174Grounded in Multimodal Pragmatics and Multimodal Critical Discourse Studies, this paper examines whether Google Images produces multimodally coherent and relevant results when queried with the socio-culturally marked terms opposite-sex couples (OSCs) and different-sex couples (DSCs). Data are analysed through a sociosemiotic framework adapted from Systemic Functional Linguistics and Visual Grammar. Findings show that most TCIs achieve internal coherence, yet multimodal relevance is unevenly distributed. OSCs queries often align with institutional and comparative discourses of coupledom, whereas DSCs queries predominantly foreground commodified and regulatory discourses of sex, further shaped by SafeSearch filtering. The study highlights the distinction between multimodal coherence and relevance in AI-mediated environments and calls for the inclusion of multimodal discourse analysis to counteract socio-cultural and operational biases.
