293This study bridges Schmid’s (2020) Entrenchment-and-Conventionalisation Model with insights from multimodality and pragmatics to examine the translation of satirical comics as a complex site of multimodal meaning-making. In satirical comics, verbal and visual cues interact to produce humour, irony, and social critique that violate entrenched and conventionalised socio-pragmatic norms. Focusing on English-language underground comix from the US counterculture years (late 1960s-1970s) and their Italian translations, the study examines how the aesthetic provocation and transgressive expressivity of satire are pragmatically recontextualised across linguistic and cultural boundaries. By tracing translational shifts in visual-verbal meaning-making processes, it demonstrates how satirical effects are reconfigured, intensified, or neutralised in accordance with entrenched schemata and conventionalised discursive routines of the target culture.
